Protecting What Matters Most: How Medicaid Asset Protection Trusts Can Help Preserve Your Family’s Legacy

One of the things I value most in my work is helping families protect their homes, farms, and land that hold deep sentimental value. There’s something incredibly meaningful about keeping family property in the family, passing it down to the next generation, and knowing it will be treasured for years to come. It’s a value that resonates with me personally, as my own family has worked hard to maintain land through generations.

For many families, though, there’s a real worry: What if long-term care costs end up taking away the home or farmland we want to leave to our children? This is where the Medicaid Asset Protection Trust (MAPT) comes in as a powerful tool.

What is a Medicaid Asset Protection Trust?

To keep things simple, I like to explain the MAPT using the “bundle of sticks” analogy. Think of property ownership as a bundle of sticks. Each stick represents a different right or power over that property—like the right to sell it, live in it, or pass it down. When you set up a MAPT, you’re giving some of those “sticks” to the trust, which means they’re no longer technically in your name. This helps protect your property from being counted as part of your assets when it comes time to qualify for Medicaid.

By putting your property into a MAPT, you’re able to protect your home, farmland, or other assets from being lost to long-term care costs, ensuring they remain in the family for future generations.

Why I Love Providing This Solution

Every time I help a family protect their cherished property, I’m reminded of how important it is to preserve the places that mean the most. Whether it’s a family homestead or farmland that has been in the family for generations, being able to protect it from the uncertainty of long-term care expenses brings so much peace of mind to families. I get a lot of joy out of providing this solution because I know just how important it is to leave a lasting legacy.

While a Medicaid Asset Protection Trust isn’t the right fit for everyone, it can be a game-changer for families worried about how long-term care costs might affect their ability to pass down their property.
