More Than a House: Fallingwater, Family, and the Power of Planning

February 14, 2026
An older couple standing in a doorway, smiling and holding mugs.

Fallingwater isn’t just a house — it’s a symbol of thoughtful design and long-term vision. Commissioned in the 1930s by Edgar J. Kaufmann Sr. and Lillian S. Kaufmann, the home was built as a retreat for their family and became one of the most iconic architectural works in America.

But what truly moved me wasn’t just the design. It was the legacy behind it.

After Edgar Sr. and Lillian’s passing, their son, Edgar Kaufmann Jr., inherited the home and made a decision that still benefits generations today: he donated Fallingwater and more than 1,500 acres of land to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy in 1963. He even established an endowment to maintain it and stayed involved in shaping the tours, visitor experience, and preservation strategy.

Their gift wasn’t just about property — it was about purpose.
It was a gift to the public, to art lovers, to architecture students, to families like mine — and maybe even yours.

A Multi-Generational Legacy

One thing that really stuck with me on this visit was how multi-layered the Kaufmann family’s contribution truly was. Edgar Sr. could have built any kind of getaway. But instead, he invested in something visionary — a home that broke boundaries and blended nature with design. It was a statement of values, creativity, and stewardship.

And Edgar Jr. didn’t just inherit something beautiful — he carried it forward. His donation of the home, the surrounding land, and the funding to preserve it has allowed millions of visitors over the decades to walk through that space, hear its story, and be inspired by its harmony with nature and innovation.

That’s legacy.

It’s not just about what you build — it’s what you leave behind with intention so that others can continue to benefit, learn, and grow from it.

Then and Now: A Personal Reflection

I first visited Fallingwater as a newlywed nearly two decades ago. I was drawn in by the boldness of the design, the way the home seemed to defy gravity, suspended over a rushing waterfall. I admired its beauty, its elegance, and Wright’s genius. At the time, I was just starting out — dreaming about my future, building a new chapter of life.

Back then, I saw the home as a breathtaking structure.

This time, returning with my children, I saw it as a story. A legacy.

On this visit, having walked alongside so many clients through their own legacy decisions, I viewed Fallingwater not just as a marvel of architecture — but as a masterclass in legacy planning. I found myself thinking less about the materials and more about the intention: Who built it? Why did they preserve it? Who decided to share it?

I was struck by how what we value evolves, but what we protect — with the right planning — can endure.

Legacy Isn’t Just for the Wealthy — It’s for All of Us

The Kaufmanns’ decision to preserve and share Fallingwater was powerful. But here’s the truth: you don’t need a famous architect or a waterfall to leave a meaningful legacy.

Most of us won’t donate a national landmark, but we do have homes, stories, values, and people we care about. And that’s where estate planning comes in.

Legacy isn’t about money. It’s about meaning.

Through a well-designed estate plan, you can:

  • Ensure your loved ones are cared for the way you want

  • Appoint trusted decision-makers if you become incapacitated

  • Avoid unnecessary legal processes like probate

  • Protect your home, business, or family farm

  • Make charitable gifts to causes that reflect your values

  • Pass on more than just assets — pass on intention

What Has Time Taught You?

We all go through seasons. Maybe you’re newly married. Maybe you’re raising children. Maybe you’re watching your parents age. Or maybe, like me, you’re circling back to a place you’ve been before — with new eyes, a new role, and a deeper understanding of what really matters.

These are the moments to reflect:
What do you want your family to remember about you?
What will your legacy look like, years from now?

You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to be intentional.

Every Legacy Deserves a Custom Blueprint

Helping people protect what matters most is why I do this work. I’ve seen firsthand how thoughtful planning can bring peace of mind — and how a lack of planning can leave families overwhelmed and lost.

I meet clients where they are. Whether you’re figuring things out for the first time or updating a plan that no longer fits, I walk with you — step by step — to create something that reflects your life, your goals, and your values.

Legacy planning isn’t one-size-fits-all. It’s custom-designed. Just like Fallingwater.

Ready to Design Your Legacy?

If this story resonated with you — if it sparked something in your heart — maybe it’s time to take the next step. Let’s sit down and talk through what you want to protect and how we can make it happen.

I offer flat-fee estate planning and a warm, educational, nonjudgmental space to help you take action.
